Weston has been named as Staffordshire’s Best Kept Village 2008.
Thi sreflects the hard work of the best kept village co-ordinaotor and many volunteers who work to keep our village looking so attractive.
May I suggest we build on this to begin to tackle wider environmental issues, not least our carbon dioxide emissions?

If the latest report proves right we have just 100 months to act to save the planet. 100 months from today is when a group of climate change scientists estimate we will reach the climate change tipping point when an incraese in global temperatures of 2% becomes unavoidable.
Of course some people will challenge these predictions but are we prepared to take the chance? Our government is debating a third runway for heathrow rather than looking at ways of tackling CO2 emissions from air travel, considering a new generation of coal fired power stations with a hope that the energy companies building them will include carbon dioxide capture - even though the technology is still under development, we may have new nuclear pwer stations coming on stream in 15 years time ( 180 months!). At international level discussions are still going on about targets rather than action, and who thinks that the biggest producer of CO2 emissions, the US, will ever reach agreement with emerging industrial nations like China and India?
If we can’t rely on national governments it is down to all of us, individuals, communities, community organisations, local authorities and businesses to act, if enough of us do so we might just make a difference - and shame national governments to act too.

Transition Town Stafford addresses both Climate Change and Peak Oil
through local people transitioning their area from oil dependency to local resilience.
There is no reason to prevent any community large or small adopting the Transition Town concept, even Ambridge is doing it! Weston could set up our own initiative, or become part of the Stafford initiative.
Let me know what you think, leave a comment on this blog.

Welcome to the Weston, Staffs community carbon blog.
I’m Bill Perrett and am looking to join with others in the community to set Weston on the road to tackling our carbon dioxide emissions and other environmental issues both local and globally.
I recently became the local community champion for the Stafford Area Save Your Energy initiative and my main role is to support those who cannot access the website and the resources on it.
I am also the local Every Action Counts champion and am keen to work with local groups and organisations to identify actions they can take to tackle issues like saving energy, travelling wisely, saving resources, ethical shopping as well as caring for our village.
I would love to hear from others in Weston or nearby villages would like to get involved. Just leave a comment on this blog.
